Kingsbury Colony

We did something today that I've been wanting to do for a long time. We have seen Hutterites everywhere and had some interactions with them, mostly with the ex-Hutterite neighbor Eli. But we've never visited a colony before. A lot of them offer produce, chickens, and prepared goods for sale to the public.

Here's the cold storage shed that they sell food out of. All they had on hand was potatoes, so I bought five pounds for three dollars. Then the guy called over to the kitchen lady and told her to meet us. We went over to the kitchen and bought two loaves of delicious looking bread from her.

I didn't take too many pictures because I didn't want to be too invasive, but here are a few. This is a row of the typical housing. It sort of looks like housing on a military base.

As we were driving by, Nikki realized that those things hanging on the line were cloth diapers! We were so excited to see this. They weren't plain old pre-folds either -- these were hand-sewn all-in-ones.

I guess it makes send that Hutterites use cloth diapers, but I didn't expect them to have such cool looking ones. I am going to have to see if they ever sell them.

Note: If you are interested in reading more about Hutterite life, I'd recommend My Hutterite Life by Lisa Marie Stahl.

On the way back home, we saw this colorful array of cows by the creek.

Then on the lane we stopped to take a peek at Nikki's uncle's cows and calves. Georgie enjoyed that immensely:
