We decided this afternoon to drive out west from Dupuyer to Swift Dam. It's 18 miles from Dupuyer to the dam.
Starting out
An old homestead on the way
There are a lot of cattle ranches along the Swift Dam road. This is the largest collection of white cows we've seen in Montana (most are Angus and Hereford). Nikki checked them out and said they were all bulls.
Not the exact version of events that I had previously heard.
The dam kind of scared us because we had the sensation that it could burst at any moment.
What scared us even more though was realizing that with the water and the trees and the mountains, we were in prime grizzly bear country. We didn't stay out of the car very long. As they say in Hungry Horse, "Your car is your cage!"
Once you cross Birch Creek, you are on the reservation.
On the way home we saw this bird.
Eagle? Falcon? Anyone out there that can help us identify it exactly?
I had the camera zoomed in so much that it was hard to track it as it flew away. I like the photo anyway.
Some nice flowering brush on the way back
Every place has there own unique sports. The east coast can have their lacrosse -- Montana has sign-shooting.
I'm going to say its a Prairie Falcon (Falco mexicanus.) One thing is for sure though, its a beautiful bird. I know you keep telling me I need to take up birding, and I think you may be right. Maybe once I get the additional zoom lense for my camera! Although, I think falconry would be a better hobby for me. It looks awesome and would force me to confront my fear of birds in a more direct way. I just have to figure out how one goes about getting into falconry. The Complete Idiot's Guide to Falconry?
Starting at the end of the year, we are going to do two new things with the blog:
1. Password protect this blog 2. Start a new blog, with a new web host.
We haven't exactly figured out the second part. The first part is sort of an attempt to protect Georgie's privacy a little more. The reason I am posting this notice here is that you'll need me to send you an invite to read it after that. Most of you we already know to do this for, but just in case, please e-mail me (Aaron) and remind me to add you to the list.
