- An Austin-style college-type guy with funny curly hair and a soul patch. He looked like the type to be in a not-very-good jam band. He made it clear in conversation that his best friend would be sharing the apartment with him. Anyone who's seen our place would get a real chuckle out the idea of having a roommate here.
- A girl who I thought was with the above guy at first. She was really nice but Colleen didn't talk to her very much so I doubt she'll get it. She lived down the street in a group house and works nearby I think.
- A girl who is a nurse and a prototypical bicycle commuter. I talked mead with her and ended up giving her a bottle of some of my homemade mead. It sounded like she had brewed before and might actually make use of the hops I have growing in back.
- A girl from Nebraska who had recently lived in Indonesia. She was very tall and brought her parents. Her parents waited outside at first but we invited them in to the AC. They were extremely nice, as I imagine everyone in Nebraska is. The parents asked me a lot of safety questions and the daughter seemed embarrassed and repeatedly stressed her familiarity with city life.
Who will Colleen choose? Hard to say. For a while she talked with her back to the college dude and the group home girl. She seemed to really like the Cornhusker and, as Nikki pointed out, is the type to be impressed by someone bringing their parents.
Colleen repeatedly stressed to all these people that several people have gotten married and had babies in her apartments and that they must be lucky. That made for some awkward moments.
Also, I think the college dude knew he was losing the battle because he offered to pay an extra $100 a month rent. Colleen is not the type to be impressed by that.
Colleen also seemed to like the nurse. I think she likes young professionals who are just getting started. I don't think I've ever told the story of when I got this apartment. I had seen a lot of crappy apartments in some pretty slummy areas but I kind of liked this area -- especially neighboring Mt. Pleasant St. -- and decided to check this place out. I found it on craigslist. I met Colleen in the Church parking lot up the street and I immediately thought she was crazy. Then we went and looked at the place. I met the people who lived here before us and Yan, who lives upstairs. Colleen talked to me about my job and about being engaged and about Texas. Then she basically told me I could have the place if I wanted it. That's her style. She's been very casual about paperwork and money and all that, but very attentive to issues like the AC being broken. She gave us a completely unexpected and hugely generous baby gift.
Yesterday, Colleen held Georgie for a while and Georgie gave her big smiles. Colleen wears really big glasses and has a vivacious, animated way of talking -- perfect for a baby's enjoyment. Anyway, we've complained a lot about our apartment and our neighborhood in the past, so I wanted to give people an idea of why we've stayed here this whole time.
Back to the contest. I think it's between the nurse and the Cornhusker. Neither the apartment seekers nor Colleen brought any pens yesterday so we ended up supplying everyone with one and having people fill out applications on every imaginable surface of our house.
When everyone left, Nikki said, "It feels nice to be social." I thought that was funny. We both actually did feel like we had just had a party -- we chatted with people about our lives, showed off the baby, gave away booze.
It's pretty funny to feel like so many people want your apartment. It makes you value it a little more. We'll post an update when we know who is going to be moving in.
